Beschreibung:

(Richard Jones earl of, politician, paymaster general, 1641-1712) An Abstract of the Representation made by the Commiss Es of Publick Accounts to the House of Lords upon the Earle of Renelaugh's Accounts, manuscript fair copy, 2pp. with conjugate blank and docket, folds, slightly browned, folio, 1702; and a few other papers, including, a digest of an 18th century legal case, 19th century poetry (including one with an acrostic) etc., v.s., v.d. (15 pieces). *** The Earl of Ranelagh had a somewhat chequered career when it came to public finances. During the reign of Charles II he was appointed a Treasury commissioner for the management of all Irish expenditure and secured large sums of money for the king out of the arrears owed to the crown in Ireland. Also interested in architecture Ranelagh was appointed "Sur-intendent generall of our Buildings…" by William III and built his own house in what became known as Ranelagh Gardens in Chelsea. In 1702 certain enquiries were ordered to be made into the public money handled over the years by Ranelagh but the enquiry foundered and nothing was proved.
