Mounted frontispiece portrait of Burton in volume I, 4 wood-engraved plates, folding lithographic map. (Blank margins of portrait slightly waterstained and soiled, map severely but cleanly torn, one plate thumb-soiled, quire I in vol. I almost detached, quires E and H in vol. II loose.) Original green cloth, uncut (worn). FIRST EDITION. Hosken p. 34; Penzer p. 70. R.F. BURTON. First Footsteps in East Africa . London: Tylston and Edwards, 1894, 2 volumes, 8° (211 x 133mm). 4 chromolithographic plates, 2 maps. Original black cloth, upper cover with portrait of Burton as a pilgrim and Arabic device stamped in gilt, gilt spine lettering, top edges red. Second ('Memorial') edition. FINE COPY, WITH STANLEY'S BOOKPLATE in both volumes. Penzer p. 63. ISABEL BURTON. The Life of Captain Sir Richd. F. Burton . London: Chapman and Hall, 1893. 2 volumes, 8° (222 x 138mm). 19 plates, illustrations. Original blue cloth with pictorial designs in yellow, gilt spine lettering, uncut. FIRST EDITION. Hosken p. 33; Penzer p. 308; together with R.F. Georgiana M. Stisted The True Life of Capt. Sir Richard F. Burton (London, 1896). The first work was probably acquired in the late 1860s as part of Stanley's early African library. He went on to acquire many of Burton's works, he met the great explorer in Italy in 1890. (7)
