ADS. 4 Dec. 1775, n.p. [Connecticut] Pay order signed by Oliver Ellsworth (1745-1807), to pay Major Joel Clarke, "Pay Master of a Company in the Service of this Colony," 16 pounds. Ellsworth was a judge, patriot, delegate to the Continental Congress and one of Connecticut's first Senators. He even received 11 electoral votes for President in 1796, but served later as the third Chief Justice of the Supreme Court. Clipped signature, "Henry Wilson, Mass." Henry Wilson (1812-1875) was Vice President under Grant, 1873-1875. Clipped signature "Thomas A. Hendricks." Thomas Hendricks (1819-1885) was Governor of Indiana 1873-1877, served in both the House and Senate representing Indiana, and as Vice President from March to November 1885 under Grover Cleveland. He died in office in November 1885. Condition: All very good.
