REVOLUTIONARY WAR]. GATES, Horatio (c.1728-1806). Brigadier General. Autograph letter signed ("Horatio Gates Adjutant General") to Maj. Gen. [Artemas] Ward in Roxbury; "Head Qrs," 1 September 1775. 1 page, 4to, integral address leaf with partial red seal, fine. During the seige of Boston, Gates notifies Ward of the arrival of prisoners from Roxbury, asking that "The General wishes for the Future you would direct the Arms, Accoutrements, belonging to...the Deserters...to be brought with them to Head Qrs., as it detains them longer in Our Camp by Two days then would be Otherwise necessary..." -- LEE, Charles (1731-1782), Major General. Autograph document signed ("Charles Lee Major General"), "Head Quarters New York," 6 February 1776. 1 page, large oblong (235 x 246mm.), verso neatly silked. Preparing the defenses of New York, Lee explains that "The Company of Riflemen, and other independant Corps which came with me, being unprovided with Quarters, it was necessary to billet them for some days until barracks should be procured....As a number of artificers [engineers] will be requisite to erect the works in this city..it will be expedient that the men on this duty be supplied with rum, and paid for, that the reputation of the Service be maintained." -- REED, Joseph (1741-1785). Brigadier General. Autograph letter signed ("Jos:Reed Secrety") to Gen. [John] Thomas (1724-1776) at Roxbury; Cambridge, 6 July 1775. 1 page, 4to, addressed on verso. Fine. Alerting Thomas that "The General" [Washington] has told him that application has been made to employ several men "...in some public Service for the Colony of Rhode Island for about 4 Weeks...You will therefore please to give them a Furlow accordingly." -- HEATH, William (1737-1814). Brigadier General. Autograph letter signed (check?) ("WHeath" with flourish) to Col. Samuel B. Webb, West Point, 3 March 1781. 1½ pages, 4to, address leaf with franking signature ("WHeath") and partial seal. Fine. He will grant "any indulgence compatible with my Duty and the public service," yet he defers to Colonel Hamilton in the matter of Webb's leave of absence. He cannot consent, he explains, as the General [Washington] has indicated he would make a decision, and thus might think Heath was "acting contrary the moment his head is turned." -- LEWIS, Andrew (1720-1781), Major General. Letter signed ("And.Lewis") to Major General Charles Lee Williamsburg, 12 June 1776. 2¾ pages, large 4to, integral address leaf with panel in Lewis; hand, slight fold separations. A long letter on military matters to the commander of the Continental Army in the Carolinas, including an update on the enemy's position on Gwin Island after abandoning Portsmouth, and news of Clinton's sailing from Halifax: "As he has not yet appeared on our coast I...believe he has steered his course for Charles Town or more southernly." Lewis reports on military measures he is undertaking. -- [MORRIS, Robert]. BROWN, John. Autograph document signed, Philadelphia, Boston, etc., 26 Sept 1781--6 May 1781. 2 pages, with a third of mathematical calculations, folio. Brown sends Morris--of the Congress's Naval Committee--his expense account from "a journey to the Eastern States on the business of the Navy Department;" in it he carefully records costs including tending to the horses, pistols, paper and quills, servants wages, and lodging among others.
