Excellent content discussing British attacks along the western New York frontier, "where [the British and their Indian allies] have been executing with the utmost Rigor the barbarous and unmanly System of warfare threatened by the British Commissioners in their Manifesto...Yesterday...a Party of the Enemy under Brandt [Joseph Brant] having destroyed 10 Houses & at Minisink, killed three & captivated five of the inhabitants and 10 Negroes...We begin to despair of the Success of our western Expedition..." -- CLINTON. DS, Poughkeepsie, 15 June 1778. 1 p, 4to . New York State Commission designating Jonathan Bixby a Captain in the Militia. Authorized on 28 May 1777, and signed by Secretary of State and by Governor George Clinton on 15 June 1778. -- AVERY, John. DS, Council Chamber 8 June 1779. 1 p, 8vo . Congressional order directing the payment of 6,400 Livres and 130 Louis to Loring Austin for his services to the American commissioners in Paris. Austin brought a packet of public documents to Franklin, including the crucial intelligence concerning Burgoyne's surrender at Saratoga. -- PARTRIDGE, George. Requesting political intelligence, and discussing Vermont's independence, refugees from British assaults on Charleston: "many of these people are gentlemen who have lived in ease & affluence, but are now real objects of Charity & compassion." -- OTIS, Samuel A. "The articles in the inclosed Advertisement being necessary to the Existence of the Continental Army, you are desired to post the inclosed in the most publick places, and use your influence to find some and as many of the articles as possible." -- TEN BROCK, Abraham. Letter from Continental Army chaplain who served with Washington, discussing establishment of a Theological School in Bennington. Avery was "everything Washington wanted in a chaplain," (Headly, 298) and he frequently rode and dined with the General. A physician as well as a cleric, he occasionally joined in the fighting, as he did in the attack on the Hessians at Trenton. -- DUANE, James. (1733-1797) Two DS, both executed at Manour Livingston, and dated 4 September 1778 and 22 July 1778. Each 1p., 8vo . Receipts directing payment to individuals for performance of public duties. -- REED, Joseph (1741-1785). Signer . Manuscript document signed ("Jos. Reed"), Proclamation of Council for a day of Thanksgiving & Prayer," 11 November 1780. 1 page, folio, 16 x 13 inches, with large, 8-pointed star-shaped seal on top left . PRAYERFUL THANKS FOR FAILURE OF BENEDICT ARNOLD'S CONSPIRACY. An official proclamation expressing "devout and thankful acknowledgements...in the late remarkable interposition of his watchful Providence in rescuing the person of our Commander in Chief and the Army from imminent dangers at the moment when Treason was ripened for execution," and directing that the "several States" set apart Thursday December 7, 1780 "as a day of publick Thanksgiving and prayer..."
