Beschreibung:

a typical gentleman's sword of the period, originally made for a specific social function and known as a mourning sword. Neumann describes this type as traditionally a small sword pattern with a blackened hilt and a grip wrapped in black ropes. Originally intended for wear following the death of a relative, it also came into common employment as an informal city sword. Iron hilt with 3/4 as d'aigne guard with clamshells and simple knuckle bow. The grip is intact with tight black braided cord wrap. 35.5" total length, without scabbard. The straight, triangular, hollow-ground blade is 29" long and 1.15 wide at hilt, tapering to a point. Unmarked, it is basically bright and smooth with minor scattered rust spots and scattered nicks in edges. A fine example of the small swords carried by many American officers during the Revolutionary War. (For further reference please see Neumann, 1998). Condition: Overall, VG condition with bright metal and slight scattered pitting. Braided cord wrap possibly older replacement. Lacking scabbard.
