Beschreibung:

REPTON (Humphry) - ANGUS (William, engraver and publisher ): THE SEATS OF THE NOBILITY AND GENTRY, in Great Britain and Wales, London, W.Angus, 1787 [but 1815]. oblong 4to (200 x 260mm.), engraved title and 63 plates by Angus after Repton, T.Sandby, C.Nattes and others, EXTRA-ILLUSTRATED WITH AN ORIGINAL WATERCOLOUR BY HUMPHRY REPTON OF SUNDRIDGE PARK IN KENT (some spotting, purple ink library stamps on the title, the wash border of the watercolour, beneath the image-area of each plate and on a few text leaves), later half-roan, cancelled stamp of the Nottingham Reference Library (worn). Repton produced a red book for E.G.Lind with the proposed changes to Sundridge Park, near Bromley, before 1794. This watercolour view (image area: 132 x 220mm.) with its characteristic before-and-after flap and two-colour wash borders shows the house from a slightly different viewpoint then that of the printed plate. The estate was sold to Claude Scott in 1796 who "asked John Nash to build him a new house. Responsibility for this original buliding is disputed, with Nash showing two views of it at the Royal Academy, and Repton drawing it for [Angus's 'Views'], claiming credit for its proportion and siting it on a shelf purposely cut into the hillside." (Carter, Goode & Laurie. Humphry Repton Landscape Gardener 1752-1818 , V.& A., 1982-3, p.156. We would like to thank Dr. Nigel Temple for his help in cataloguing this lot.
