Title: Reports of Nelson Miles and other officers on the conflict at Wounded Knee and the events leading up to it, in the Report of the Secretary of War Author: Miles, Major General Nelson A., et al. Place: Washington, D.C. Publisher: Government Printing Office Date: 1892 Description: xxi, [2], 290 pp. With 4 folding maps, 1 folding table. (8vo) 22.5x13.5 cm (9x5¼"), modern ¾ calf & marbled boards, spine lettered in gilt, raised bands. Significant reports on one of the final battles between soldiers of the United States Government and native Americans, a culmination of disaffection and protest that resulted in what is now know as the Battle of Wounded Knee, or the Wounded Knee Massacre. The present volume is part of the 38-volume Executive Documents of the House of Representatives, and is itself incomplete, ending in mid-sentence of an unconnected report, but contains all of the reports by the Secretary of War and officers relating to the conflagration. Most important of these is the report of Major General Nelson A. Miles, which outlines the reasons behind the disturbances and the resulting conflict. The four maps are of note: "Scene of the Fight with Big Foot's Band, Dec. 29th, 1890"; "Sketch of the Scene of the Mission Fight, December 30th, 1890"; "Map of the Country embraced in the recent Campaign against the Hostile Sioux Indians of Dakota... from the beginning to the surrender in January 1891"; and "Map of the Departments of Dakota and the Platte, to accompany the report of Brig. Gen. T.H. Ruger... 1891." Lot Amendments Condition: Title-page with some edge wear, a neat archival tape repair; short stub tears to two maps; very good or better, in handsome modern binding. Item number: 287682
