The maps, showing how to get from San Francisco to the gold region, are based, as noted by Howes, "on a four month's stay in California." Among these are George Derby's "The Sacramento Valley from the American River to Butte Creek"; Tyson's "Geological reconoissances in California"; and R.S. Williamson's "Sketch of the route of Capt.
