Place: [Washington] Publisher: Date: 1850 Description: 127, 37 pp. Illustrated with 13 lithographed folding maps, profiles, sections, etc. Comprises Part I & II of Doc. 47, 31st Congress, 1st Session. (8vo) 22.7x14.5 cm (9x5¾"), removed from larger volume with remains of stitching on spine. First Edition. Significant work on the geology and topography of the area between San Francisco and the gold region, containing in Part I: Tyson's memoir; Report of General Smith; Report of Lieutenant Talbot. Report of Professor Frazer; Report of General Riley; Reports [two] of Lieutenant Ord. And in Part II: Report of Lieutenant G.H. Derby; Reports [two] of Lieutenant R.S. Williamson. The maps, showing how to get from San Francisco to the gold region, are based, as noted by Howes, "on a four month's stay in California." Among these are George Derby's "The Sacramento Valley from the American River to Butte Creek"; Tyson's "Geological reconoissances in California"; and R.S. Williamson's "Sketch of the route of Capt.
