Scarce report on the need for a new state map for California, following shortly after the 1854 publication of William Eddy's "Official Map of the State of California." Though a beautiful map, with lovely hand-coloring, it was deemed unsatisfactory for a variety of reasons. The proposal is to gather up the available information from various sources, and "combine it all into an accurate general map of the State, in manuscript, and not in print." The "State should discard all idea of engraving, printing or publishing a map, and should spend not a dollar upon gorgeous coloring, ostentatious lettering, borders and pictorial embellishments. Nothing should be placed upon such a map that has not been ascertained by actual survey... This map...should never be made the subject of copy-right... any publisher choosing to undertake... publication at his own risk, should be allowed freely to do so..." Issued as State Senate Document No. 17, Session 1855. OCLC/WorldCat lists only five copies in institutional libraries.
