Triumph of Liberty, Dedicated to its Defenders in America, 1796 .
Paris and New York, 1797. Engraving with etching printed in blue, engraved by Peter C. Verger, ample margins (15 ½ x 20 ½ inches, 390x520 mm, overall). Condition: Bottom left corner infilled, light toning, tissue-backed. Matted. early american allegorical print celebrating liberty, independence and democracy. “In the right of the picture is the Goddess of Liberty, rising to the skies on an obelisk. The Book of the Law is supported by a cube of the obelisk, pointing to the solidity of the moral, 'The Rights of Man.' At the distance are the three Divinities, namely, Justice, holding the Scales and Sword, Peace, presenting an olive branch, and Plenty with a horn full of fruit, an emblematic presage of the happiness of the people. In the left is a grand tomb, enclosing the names of those American heroes who have served and died in defense of Liberty and their Country, and those who have deserved well of it, near which is the Genius of the Country, in the habit and helmet of Minerva, bearing the colors of her nation, and at her side an Eagle, emblematical of America. At the bottom of the picture is a seven headed Hydra, or Despotism rumbling into ruin." ( Fowble ). This copy an issue without the text in the lower margin. Fowble, Two Centuries of Prints in America 322; Reilly, American Political Prints , 1796-1.
