An Historical, Geographical, Commercial, and Philosophical View of the United States of America, and of the European Settlements in America and the West-Indies . New York: John Reid 1796. Together 5 volumes, 4 text volumes, 8 o (217 x 128 mm) and atlas folio (428 x 256 mm). Text with four engraved portrait frontispieces and 23 (of 24) engraved plates. (Lacking the plan of Washington in volume 3, some occasional pale spotting, browning and offsetting.) Atlas with title-page and 20 full-sheet engraved maps and folding plan of Washington, D.C. (Some spotting and browning, light handling creases.) Text bound in contemporary tree calf gilt (rehinged); atlas in original calf-backed boards, paper cover label (a few repairs); atlas in morocco folding case. Provenance : Albert Picket's Seminary (bookplate in text volumes); Leonora C. Thompson (gift of E.A. Bachelder, inscription on flyleaf in atlas). FIRST EDITION of the second American atlas, first edition in book form of the text. Reid's atlas is preceded only by Mathew Carey's General Atlas , also of 1796; Winterbotham's text was originally issued from 1795-96 in parts. Subjects in the atlas include North America, South America, the United States, New Hampshire, Maine, Massachusetts, Vermont, Rhode Island, Connecticut, New York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Delaware and Maryland, Virginia, Kentucky, North Carolina, South Carolina, Georgia, Tennessee and the West Indies. This copy further includes the folding plan of Washington, D.C. not present in all copies. Reid's atlas was published to accompany Wintherbotham's treatment of the discovery and early settlement of America, the American Revolution and the West Indies. Most of the plates illustrate birds, quadrupeds and reptiles found in the West Indies. The plate of the tobacco plant is the first color plate published in an American book.
