Title: Reflections on the Revolution in France and on the Proceedings in Certain Societies in London Relative to that Event Author: Burke, Edmund Place: London Publisher: Printed for J. Dodsley Date: 1790 Description: [4], 356 pp. (8vo) 8x5, contemporary quarter green morocco and marbled boards, spine lettered in gilt, leather label on front board. Burke's most celebrated work, and one of the greatest polemics in the English language. "The effect of the `Reflections' was extraordinary. It created a reaction against the revolution; it divided Englishmen into two parties and did much to ruin the Whigs, and to produce a new political combination. Abroad [it] created no less stir than at home, and Burke received the compliments of different foreign sovereigns. His political foresight is exhibited by his prophecy of the time when, all restraints that mitigate despotism being removed, France would fall a prey to arbitrary power." - DNB 3, 358; PMM 239; Lowndes 316; Todd 53c. A book of complex bibliography, this appears to be the second impression of the second edition (approximately 2000 copies printed one week after the first edition), as it contains the misprint "ascertainmennt" at p. 223 line 23. Lot Amendments Condition: Some wear to edges; pencil markings and ink notations in margins of several pages; else very good. Item number: 182578
