Rebecca Lepkoff (American, 1916-2014) Bridge and Laundry, New York City, 1930s. Dated, inscribed, and signed "...NYC. Rebecca Lepkoff" in pencil on the verso l.l. and l.r., respectively. Gelatin silver print on single weight paper, image size 9 1/2 x 7 1/4 in. (24.1 x 18.4 cm), unmatted, unframed. Condition: Light silvering, unobtrusive crease in u.l. corner of sheet, minor soiling on verso. N.B. As a college student, Rebecca Lepkoff studied dance with Martha Graham and bought her first camera with money she earned as a dancer at the 1939 New York World's Fair. She participated in a photography program run by the National Youth Administration, a Depression-era government agency, from 1939 to 1941. In 1945 she joined the Photo League, whose members were committed to documentary photography as a vehicle for effecting social change. Lepkoff was particularly interested in the relationships she observed on the streets and in the tenements of New York City. Born and raised on the Lower East Side, her photographs present an intimate and personal record of this familiar neighborhood.
