PRESIDENT REAGAN AND THE FIRST WOMAN JUSTICE OF THE SUPREME COURT Sandra Day O'Connor was appointed to the Supreme Court by President Reagan on 19 August 1981 in fulfillment of a campaign pledge to name the first woman to the Court. Her nomination was confirmed a month later by the unanimous vote of the Senate and she took the oath of office on 26 September 1981.
