Autograph draft letter signed ("RR") as Governor of California, to Suzanne Labin, n.p., [5 July 1967]. 1 page, 4to (11 x 8½ in.), on verso of mimeographed list of budgetary expenditures , in fine condition. "A POLICY BASED ON VICTORY": REAGAN COMMENTS ON THE WAR IN VIETNAM Reagan writes to Suzanne Labin, expert on Soviet and communist propaganda. Labin was a fiercly anti-Communist conservative who was friends of the Ngo brothers and others in Vietnam. Reagan writes: "There can be no question of our need for a resolute policy in Viet Nam--a policy based on victory. I have expressed this view whenever the opportunity presented itself. The action of Israel has done much to expose the fallacy of the idea that any resolution on the part of the free world will lead to escalation & W.W. III. Unfortunately my own actions are now limited by the office I hold and the attempt by some to distort any & every act of mine as being evidence of an interest in the coming election. I am not a candidate & hence feel restrained until this fact is accepted." Reagan was in fact developing the idea of running for President, and at the August 1967 Republican Party conenvtion, Reagan proved a serious contender, coming in third after Nixon and Nelson Rockefeller.
