Autograph letter signed ("Ronald Reagan"), to Merced, Pacific Palisades, California, 23 July [1961]. 2 pages, 4to, on personal stationery (with "Regan" corrected by hand) . "MORE OF US IN THIS BUSINESS SHOULD DEMAND RETRACTIONS & CORRECTIONS FROM THE PRESS" AN ANGRY REAGAN BASHES DREW PEARSON AND "MOVIE GOSSIP WRITERS" FOR THEIR DISHONEST AND UNFAIR REPORTING. Pearson wrote a column attacking Reagan for opposing a health insurance bill then before the Congress. According to Pearson, Reagan was trying to curry favor with conservatives for a run at political office. Reagan issued an angry denial, and tells Merced: "Perhaps more of us in this business should demand retractions & corrections from the press, but down through the years we get a little gun shy...Based on past experience I had to assume that if he did give me any space to answer in his column he then would follow my words with editorial comment of his own. In other words he always has the last word. Some columnists will do this knowing the reader interest in a drawn out argument or feud..." The restraints imposed by American libel laws also frustrate Reagan: "Legal action is possible but under our libel laws the victim has to prove material damage. I can't sue & win just because he's been dishonest or unpleasant. To win I must be able to prove that as a direct result of his column I lost my job or my home was destroyed or friends turned against me & would no longer associate with me. Than Heavens none of this happened but in Eng. they have a different situation. There the press can lose in court just on the basis of having been dishonest or unfair." When a star is libeled by a gossip rag like Confidential , Reagan points out, the public often think the charge is true simply because the victim did not sue. "Frankly I doubt if some of our movie gossip writers could stay in business under Eng. laws, but under our own they go their merry way..."
