London & Edinburgh: Ballantyne, Hanson & Co. for William Blackwood & Sons and Edward Ravenscroft, [1863]-1884. 3 volumes, 2° (559 x 422mm). 1p. subscriber's list, errata slip in vol.I. 58 plates after J.Black, W.Richardson, R.K.Greville, J.Wallace and others (comprising: 50 hand-coloured lithographed plates; 1 tinted lithographed plate; 2 uncoloured lithographed plates; 4 mounted albumen prints by F.Mason Good; one sheet with 4 lithographed maps [2 with touches of hand-colouring]), numerous illustrations. (24 plates with appreciable browning, some text spotted, printed numbers at upper outer blank corner of each text page and recto and verso of each plate, except the cancelled plates.) Contemporary green half morocco gilt, t.e.g. (spines worn, extremities scuffed). Provenance : Scarborough Public Libraries (book-labels, numbering of pages). FIRST EDITION. This copy includes 5 plates present as both cancels and cancellanda (the cancels are bound at the back of vol.III). The imprints of the cancellanda are as follows: vol.I pl.11 by W.Richardson; vol.II pl.29 by James Black; pl.31 by Robert Black for James Black; pl.32 by W.H.McFarlane; vol.III pl.37 by F.Schenk from a photograph. All hand-coloured. The corresponding cancels are: pl.11 Robert Black for James Black (hand-coloured); pl.29 by James Black (black and white); pl.31 by J.D.Carmichael for R.K.Greville (hand-coloured); pl.32 by James Black (black and white); pl.37 by W.H.McFarlane from a photograph (tinted).
