rare pirated copy of Mark Tiddeman's chart for Seller's 'The English Pilot, The Fourth Book', north oriented to the right, title panel upper right, emblematic buildings, compass rose and rhum lines, engraved map with hand-colouring, 460 x 560mm., slight wear on old folds, loss of c.2mm and c.5mm to left and right side, respectively, supplied in pen facsimile, with a few attendant repaired tears, mounted at sheet edges onto card support, Dublin, 'at the two Bibles in Essex Street', c.1749. *** An extremely scarce copy of this rather inaccurate chart of New York harbour from Sandy Hook to Westchester, showing Staten Island and a large part of Long Island. Tiddeman's original map was first published by Mount & Page for Seller's English Pilot in 1737. The Dublin publisher George Grierson (d.1753) is well known for his pirated copies, mostly of Moll maps but also of those by Mount & Page, the relative scarcity of which makes them much more sought-after than the originals from which they were re-engraved. Grierson published his pirated edition of The Fourth Book of The English Pilot, covering the coasts of North America and the West Indies, in 1749. It is perhaps worthy of note that, according to Tooley, the first issue of Tiddeman's map did not credit him as cartographer, where the later issue of 1753, after Grierson's also uncredited edition appeared, did carry his name, perhaps to identify and reclaim it.
