Early Cretaceous 100 million years ago Lightning Ridge, New South Wales, Australia Designed by Petra and Dietmar Boehme, Germany Lightning Ridge in South Australia is among the only Australian localities in which opalized fossils are found. The opalization probably commenced soon after the animal was buried in sediments super-saturated with silica. These specimens rarely survived the excavation process or they are destroyed when polished on the lapidary's wheel. It would have taken a considerable length of time to form such a collection as is featured in this unique necklace, which is composed of 16 opalized belemnites drilled lengthwise and centers on an opalized snail. Typically collected for their unique nature, the jewelry artist has sacrificed these gem-quality specimens in order to create a one-of-a kind piece. Completed by a 14K yellow gold s-hook clasp, length 20 in. Total aggregate weight: 252.0 cts.
