Rare Carved and Painted Maple Crooked Back and Cane Side Chair, probably Boston, Massachusetts, c. 1715-25, the superstructure comes from the center of the crest and flows back with supporting scrolls and plumes at its extremities to touch the serpentine molded crest, which has leafage and a cyma curved caned splat with conforming flanking reverse curved wood patterns above the molded stay rail and the carved trapezoidal seat, on its cyma curved front skirt over the block and baluster-turned front legs ending in carved Spanish feet joined by a ring-turned bulbous stretcher, the raking rear legs are composed of blocks, old black paint, (minor restoration), ht. 45 1/2, seat ht. 19 1/2 in. Literature: American Furniture, edited by Luke Beckerdite, 2002, published by Chipstone Foundation, "The Politics of the Caned Chair," by Glenn Adamson, pp. 175-206, pictures and discusses an almost identical crooked back chair, plate 35. Note: This is one of the three known American crooked-back cane chairs.
