(Rare Books, Maps, Manuscripts & Photographs, 9th October 2019) KIRCHER, ATHANASIUS MUSURGIA UNIVERSALIS SIVE ARS MAGNA CONSONI ET DISSONI IN X LIBROS DIGESTA Rome: Ex Typographia Haeredum Francesco Corbelletti, 1650. 4to, engraved frontispiece to second volume, numerous illustrations throughout text, but lacking: Mmm1 and Mmm4 from volume 1, 3M4 and 3N1 from volume 2, engraved frontispiece, portrait of Archduke Leopold and 21 engraved plates, bound in 18th century half calf gilt, ownership signature to title-page in an early hand suggesting the volume was part of a convent library, light browning to several pages, a few corners lightly dampstained, a couple of small tears to p.321 slightly affecting printed area, some rubbing to covers [USTC 4021141] Note: This is one of the seminal works of musicology. The book had a great influence on the development of Western music, particularly so on J.S. Bach (1685-1750) and Beethoven (1770-1827).
