Solomon Cosby, missionary of the Colored Baptist Convention of Virginia, who graduated from the Richmond Institute in 1878 and died in 1881 in present-day Nigeria, places this in the early 1880s. The four preachers named were the leading Baptist clergy of Richmond; particularly notable was Rev.John Jasper, a former slave-turned-philosopher who was such a spell-binding orator, that many who heard his famous sermon, “The Sun Do Move” (which poet Langston Hughes later used as title for a musical drama) were convinced of his theory that the sun revolved around the earth.
