The French word "crosse" is translated as "a crosier, or Bishops staffe; also, a Cricket staffe; or, the crooked staffe wherewith boyes play at cricket". STC 5830; Goldman p. 75: "perhaps the earliest reference to cricket so spelt"; Padwick 843.
