RAND, Ayn. Atlas Shrugged. New York, 1957. 8/so. Original green cloth (front hinge weak, minor shelfwear). FIRST EDITION INSCRIBED in the year of publication to the parents of her student and lover Nathaniel Branden, Dinah and Joe Blumenthal. The story of the tumultous affair between the fiery, opinionated Rand and her much younger student is well documented. He considered her an intellectual mentor and she, while in love, believed him to be the living exponent of her beliefs, to the extent that her Atlas Shrugged was dedicated to him. The inscription in the present copy "To Dinah and Joe- The parents of the greatest man I have ever met- Affectionately, Ayn" echoes the inscription on a photo that Rand presented to Branden's parents in 1952, in which she calls him "the most wonderful son I've ever seen." (Christie's East 22 May 2000, lot 177). Unbelievably given the depth of emotion expressed, their affair was still a closely guarded secret. An important association. Provenance: Nathaniel Branden.
