Beschreibung:

RAMUS, Petrus (1515-1572). Arithmeticae Libri Duo: Geometriae Septem et Viginti. Basle: Eusebius and Nicolaus Episcopius, 1569. 2 parts in 1 volume, 4° (250 x 185mm.). Title with woodcut device, woodcut diagrams and illustrations throughout. (Some light spotting.) Old limp vellum (lacking ties, slightly soiled). FIRST EDITION of Ramus's text-book on geometry, printed with his Arithmetica (first published in 1555). The manuscript of this edition was rescued from Ramus's library at the Collège Presles when he fled Paris in 1568. It was printed in Protestant Basle while Ramus toured Switzerland and Germany, avoiding the political turmoil and religious intolerance then holding sway in Paris. This book has a more practical orientation than the Libri Tres of 1555, in line with Ramus's desire to link mathematical theory with everyday practice. Adams R-69; Dictionary of Scientific Biography , volume 11, pp. 286-290.
