Le Diverse et artificiose machine … Dal ponte della tresia ingegniero del Christianissimo Re di Francia et di Pollonia. Composte in lingua Italiana et Francese
Paris: In Casa del'autore, 1588. Folio (12 1/2 x 8 3/4 in). Engraved title page, portrait of the author, 195 engraved plates including 20 double-page (plates numbered 148 and 149 are a single double-page plate). Full modern calf antique. Condition : one leaf with paper repair in bottom blank margin. first edition. one of the most important and earliest pictorial technical treatises to be printed, emphasising the unlimited possibilities of machines including an early prototype of hypertext. The work contains depictions of pumps, fountains, derricks, bridges, mills, hydaulic machinery, military machines, cranes and pneumatic devices and was exceptionally sumptuously produced. One reason for this is that it was dedicated to the patron, Henri III; and secondly, because he had had several previous designs stolen from him by an associate who published them in a counterfeit edition, As a result he made the book as lavishly as possible, producing it at his own house, so that it would be difficult to counterfeit. In fact he made the book so expensive and difficult to reproduce, that not only were there no pirate editions of it, but it was only reproduced once - in Germany in 1620 - before the twentieth century. Dibner, 'Heralds of Science' 173; Cockle , A Bibliography of Military Books , p. 788; Mortimer, French 452; Norman 1777.
