RAIN-IN-THE-FACE, Sioux Indian Chief. Cabinet photograph signed on verso ("Rain in the face"), by George E. Spencer U.S. Army Photo., Chicago (imprint on mount), n.d. [circa 1893]. 165 x 108 mm. (6½ x 4¼ in.) including mount, some minor marginal soiling. A striking half-length portrait of the Sioux Indian Chief and Medicine Man, who fought at the Battle of Little Big Horn, signed in pencil on verso. Inscribed photographs of Rain-in-the-Face are rare: an identical cabinet card portrait (also signed in pencil on verso) sold at auction in 1995 (Smith, Perline & Co., New York, April 7, 1995, lot 52 for $11,000). Following his imprisonment by Gen. George Custer, Chief Rain in the Face promised that some day he would cut out the General's brother, Tom's heart. He was immortalized in Longfellow's poem entitled: "The Little Bighorn."
