Railway interest: R W URIE (1854 - 1937), Locomotive Engineer for the London and South Western Railway Company: a hand-drawn, finely painted retirement citation dated 1923 from The London and South Western Railway Company to 'Robert Wallace Urie Esq. M.I.M.E'., the inscription beneath a cartouche enclosing a watercolour picture of a 736 class L.S.W.R., locomotive, and signed at the base by various Railway staff and set within a detailed floral border, produced by Waterlow & Sons Ltd, London Wall, EC2, framed, approx. size 26in x 20in (66cm x 51cm) excluding frame. This is being sold together with a large collection of Mr R W Urie's own personal papers contained within a small black metal tin trunk, including several note books, the first, a school exercise book dated 1870, this includes rough technical drawings showing rotary engine, coal washing machine, expansion valve, together with notes and equations. Later note books include detailed lists of locomotives and costings of locomotives. The rest of the paperwork mostly relates to his employment as Locomotive Engineer for the London and South Western Railway Company, including his letter of appointment (6th December 1912), letter of congratulations on his appointment from other staff members - Mechanical Engineers Shops Dept (10th December 1912) he seems to have been much liked and held in great esteem for treating subordinates with such kindness and thoughtfulness, as well as for his professional abilities. There are his typed-up notes for a talk that he gave to The London and South Western Railway Engineering Society; in this document the death of Urie's predecessor (Duguld Drummond) is referred to. Also in the presentation are several references to future developments in engineering - electrical and diesel motors. Urie designed improvements in Steam Superheaters used in the engine design; these improvements are referred to within the presentation as a way of making the steam railway engines more efficient, thus negating the need for developments in Electric and Diesel engines. There is a copy of the legal application to 'patent' the specification of Urie's 'Eastleigh' superheater (3rd September 1914); this includes technical drawings and Urie's handwritten notes to the solicitor. Included in the handwritten notes are Urie's indignant and terse response to, what appears to be, a questioning about the originality of Urie's superheater design, Other items include photographs of some of his engines, a blue print, a zinc printing plate showing the design of his Superheater, magazines, other letters, etc. (a lot)
