Document signed ("Racine") 24 July 1676. 1 page, oblong , ON PARCHMENT, with coat of arms stamp 'Generalit de Paris', some slight shrinkage, mounted and framed with engraving of Racine. In French. A receipt for the sum of fifteen hundred livres, issued to Racine by King Louis XIV of France, as salary for the year 1675. A few months later Racine would stage his last play, Phdre . After its premiere in 1677, Racine cut all links with the commercial stage, and settled down to married life. He became Royal Historiographer to King Louis XIV, accompanying him on his military campaigns and recording his exploits. His later plays, for private view, were commissioned by Louis XIV's wife, and include Esther (1689) and Athalie (1601). This payment can be found in the accounting book of the Btiments du Roi, stating that Racine was paid on 10 June 1676. The receipt is not published in Raymond Picard's Nouveau Corpus Racinianum , a collection of contemporary documents pertaining to Racine.
