Unpaginated. Introduction by Paul Krassner. Illustrated throughout in black and white. (4to) cloth-backed decorated boards, dust jacket. First Edition. A few tears to jacket, small chips to spine ends, rubbing; light edge and corner wear to binding; a clean, handsome copy in very good jacket. The publication of an Underground cartoonist by a major publishing house, in a hardcover edition no less, was a significant milestone in Crumb's career and in the acceptance of UG comix by the literati. Mainstream recognition came with its own set of problems, however: "When Viking Press published R. Crumb's Head Comix in 1968, they made the mistake of tampering with his artwork, including placing band-aids over a whistling cunt in 'Ultra Super Modernistic Comics.' Crumb vowed that from then on he would work only in the underground." — Patrick Rosenkranz, Rebel Visions: The Underground Comix Revolution, 1963-1975. Fantagraphics: 2002. A limited edition of 150 softcover and 15 hardcover catalogues is available. 400 lots, fully illustrated. Fun reference, great keepsake. Softcover $30, deluxe hardcover with dust jacket and limitation plate $200. Ten of the 15 hardcovers are pre-ordered and the rest will go quickly, so reserve yours now.
