QI BAISHI (1864-1957)
QI BAISHI (1864-1957) Lychees Hanging scroll, ink and colour on paper 178 x 47 cm. (70 x 18 1/2 in.) Signed, with three seals of the artist NOTE: While most Chinese painters limited their subject matter to traditional landscapes or bird and flower compositions, Qi Baishi dared to venture beyond these genres and painted everything he saw around him. His many and varied subjects included vegetables, fruit, animals, insects, and marine life among others. The lychee was a perennial favourite of the artist as this particular fruit was hard to come by, especially in the Northern provinces. Qi Baishi had tasted it on one of his journeys to the South and found it so delicious that it frequently figured in his work thereafter.
