QI BAISHI 1863-1957)
QI BAISHI(1863-1957) Mountain Villiage Hanging scroll, ink and colour on paper 134 x 33.5 cm. (52 3/4 x 13 1/4 in.) Signed, with one seal of the artist NOTE: Qi Baishi was well-known for his depictions of village life. He was born intoa farming family, but because of his poor health, he was asked not to work in the fields but to herd the buffalo. His grandmother adored him and was worried that he would encounter danger while herding. So she hung a bell around his neck to keep animals away from him. Whild his childhood was hard, it left Qi with good memories. Qi Baishi recalled a moment when he returned from herding and the ringing sound of the bell sounded like the giggling noise of the chicks in front of the house. His grandmother was waiting for him for dinner. Qi Baishi kept this memory fresh until his old age. Even while living in the city of Beijing, this painting of a villiage still is rich with innocence and purity.
