PUGIN, Augustus Welby (1812-1852). A series of seven autograph letters signed to Richard Myddelton Biddulph, S. Augustus, Alton Towers and elsewhere, incompletely dated, including three documents signed, comprising a 'List of Drawings sent', 'Specification of work to be done in the alteration of stables, Chirk Castle', and 'List of work to be done in the Erection of Park Entrance gates Chirk Castle', including three small sketches; and three autograph letters signed to N.J. Williams (mason at Chirk), Dublin and n.d. [July -August 1846], including two small sketches; together '10 pages, 4to' (letters to Williams worn with some tears); envelopes; [ and ] a collection of related correspondence, including letters to Colonel Biddulph by Edward Welby Pugin (3 letters, June-August 1854, referring to the terrace and conservatory at Chirk), and on behalf of Minton & Co. (4 letters and a bill, July 1855 - Nov 1857, together with a sketch of a tile, 250 x 210mm, on tracing paper) and J. Hardman & Co. (one, referring to light pendants), with an unsigned 'Ground Plan of State Bedroom Chirk Castle', 420 x 430 mm., on tracing paper. Pugin's letters refer to drawings he has sent for a number of aspects of the work at Chirk, including the flower garden (including sketches of two models of stone edging, one an improved model so as not to impede mowing), the stables, the school, a wicket gate ('a Turnstile will not go at all well'), and tables and benches; in a letter dated 4 June Pugin sets out a list of drawings sent for work by Minton, Crace and Hardman. He refers in a letter dated 4 May to this detailed approach: 'I can assure you that I never mind trouble in little things for if the minor points & fittings of a building are neglected it is impossible to produce a good general effect - so you will always find me ready for a moderate con-si-de-ra-tion to supply you with anything from a coal scuttle upwards'. Pugin's letters to Williams refer to work on the chimney stacks and on stone fenders. together with a list, 1840s, discussing the rebuilding of Chirk Castle; and blockprinted designs for Minton tiles with the Myddelton arms, inscribed in pencil 'Fingers of hands too far apart, otherwise sketch is correct/RMB verso with inscriptions on envelope 'stech of tiles ed.
