xvi, [17]-339, 60, [6] ad pp. 6 color plates. (8vo), 7¼x4¾ in., blue cloth with spine stamped in gilt. Second Edition. Virulently racist treatise first published as Negroes and Negro "Slavery" and later republished under this title, with plates added and references to miscegenation removed. John H. Van Evrie (1814–1896) was an American physician and defender of slavery, the author of several books on race and slavery which expounded the ideas of scientific racism for a popular audience. Van Evrie has been described as "perhaps the first professional racist in American history."
