PSALTER, in Church Slavonic -- Psaltir Davidis . Venice: Bartolomeo Ginammi, 1638. 4° (194 x 136mm). Collation: p4 A-Z8 AA-LL8 (p1 title, p2 prologue, prayers, A1r Psalms, O3v Synaxarion, Horae, LL8r Cyrillic alphabet table, colophon, verso blank). 273 leaves (of 276, lacking first 3 leaves). Printed in red and black. Large woodcut opening of the Psalms, woodcut head- and tailpieces. (p4 remargined with loss of one word, A3 and LL8 defective, stains, repaired tears.) 17th-century, probably Italian, calf over wooden boards tooled in blind, central medallion of King David on front (restored). Provenance : illegible stamp, numerous annotations of various dates.

RARE AND IMPORTANT PSALTER printed in the cyrillic types of Jerolim Zagurovic, in whose footsteps Bartolomeo Ginammi followed as a Venetian printer of Serbian Cyrillic books. Ginammi's Psalter reprints Zagurovic's 1569 edition. It is considered to be the last book printed in Serbian at Venice, and therefore the last book printed anywhere in the Serbian language for more than a century. It is also known as being the first Serbian book to use Arabic numerals for pagination. Safarik and Jirecek, No copies are recorded in ABPC or RBH; institutional copies are recorded in Berlin, Halle, Paris (Mazarine), Venice (Marciana), and Zurich (ZB).
