Not only is the work impossible to grasp from this first volume, which only makes sense in relation to the others, but the proofs are uncorrected. Proust refers again to the subject of Daudet's proposed review, which the latter is eminently well qualified to write; 'Mon cher petit, littérairement (je veux dire dans l'ordre réel du talent) personne ne peut être plus autorisé que vous à mes yeux', discussing again where it might best be placed, and mentioning also his pleasure at Madame Daudet's favourable opinion of the work. He sends a greeting to Cocteau, and finally discloses that he has shaved off his beard, 'Je vous embrasse tendrement (sans barbe, je l'ai coupée)', 9 pages, 8vo . The discussion of flowers refers to the passage in the novel anticipating the appearance of Gilberte, in which a border of jasmines, pansies and verveine is described ( Du côté de chez Swann , I, 140). Proust writes that the proofs still lack certain very important small incidents which tighten the knots of jealousy around the unfortunate Swann, and explaining his concept of the significance of such details, continues 'Et même quand ce sera prêt à paraître, ce sera comme des morceaux dont on ne sait pas qu'ils sont des leit-motives quand on les a entendus isolément dans une Ouverture sans compter tout ce qui se situera après coup (ainsi la Dame en rose était Odette, etc.)'.
