Several essays were submitted to the Academy over a number of years, this volume for 1721 contains two essays: Quelle seroit la maniere la plus parfaite de conserver sur Mer l'égalité du Mouvement d'une Pendule, soit par la construction de la machine, soit par la suspension by Massy, a clockmaker in the Low Countries, which won the second prize; Discours sur le Principe, la Nature, et la Communication du Mouvement by Jean-Pierre de Crousaz, which won the first prize. Massy's essay is dismissed by Baillie, "His thesis is without value; he puts a pendulum clock in a large cupboard, heated by a stove with a thermometer."
