Beschreibung:

proposées pour l'année mil sept cens vingt..., first edition, folding engraved plate (lightly spotted, torn and repaired), contemporary ink initials "L.G." on title and with sketch on old front free endpaper, text foxed and browned, a few stains, some marginal tears and repairs, Roberto Panicali's copy with his ink monogram stamp on front free endpaper, modern calf-backed boards, spine with red morocco label and slightly faded, [Baillie p.159], 4to, Paris, Claude Jombert, 1721. *** Very rare; COPAC lists only one copy, from Isaac Newton's library in Cambridge Special Collections. Several essays were submitted to the Academy over a number of years, this volume for 1721 contains two essays: Quelle seroit la maniere la plus parfaite de conserver sur Mer l'égalité du Mouvement d'une Pendule, soit par la construction de la machine, soit par la suspension by Massy, a clockmaker in the Low Countries, which won the second prize; Discours sur le Principe, la Nature, et la Communication du Mouvement by Jean-Pierre de Crousaz, which won the first prize. Massy's essay is dismissed by Baillie, "His thesis is without value; he puts a pendulum clock in a large cupboard, heated by a stove with a thermometer."
