PROJECT GEMINI – Hacker, Barton C. and Grimwood, James M. On the Shoulders of Titans, A History of Project Gemini (NASA SP-4203). Washington: NASA, 1977. An illustrated, in-depth history of the limbo project that advanced NASA's capabilities in human space flight, marking United States' lead in the space race against the Soviet Union. SIGNED and INSCRIBED with their individual Gemini flight number(s) by Buzz ALDRIN, Frank BORMAN, Gene CERNAN, Dave SCOTT, Gordon COOPER, Charles CONRAD, Richard GORDON Wally SCHIRRA and Tom STAFFORD. Gemini Program was started in the early 1960s to develop techniques needed to understand the space environment prior to Apollo flights scheduled for around 1966 or 1967. This book covers the failures and victories of the Gemini program, ranging from the spacecraft and Titan launch vehicle development with their associated management challenges, descriptions of each manned flight, and flights with the Agena target vehicle that allowed rendezvous and docking critical to Apollo development. Thirty full color earth and spacecraft orbital images are included, plus numerous half-tone images as well as drawings and diagrams. Appendices cover astronaut flight assignments, experiment data, program costs, data tracking network, and Department of Defense support. 6.75 by 9.75 inches. 308 pp. Original green printed wrappers.
