PROCESSIONAL, use of Mainz, in Latin. DECORATED MANUSCRIPT ON VELLUM [Germany, Mainz?, c. 1500] 174 x 134mm. 147 leaves: (apparently lacking 12ff) gatherings of 8ff [1 8 (lacks 4), 2 8 (lacks 7) 5 8 (lacks 1 and 8), 9 8 (lacks 8), 11 8 (additional inserted leaf after 8), 12 8 (lacks 7,8), 14 8 (lacks 6,7), 17 8 (lacks 7,8)]. Ruled in black, justification 11 x 7mm, prickings in outer margins, 18 lines, written in brown ink in a gothic textura, rubrics and foliation in red, initials in red and blue, many larger calligraphic initials decorated with heads and birds, (recto of first leaf worn with use), 218 PAGES WITH MUSIC on 4 black staves. Modern brown morocco. PROVENANCE: Made for the use of Mainz according to a rubric on f.12. Various local churches, St. John and St. Michael, are mentioned in rubrics, also the relics of St. Martin, Bishop of Mainz, and several references to St. Boniface, one of the patron saints of Mainz. Note on f.81 referring to Bartholomaeus Holzhauser (1613-58), stating that he died on 10 May in Bingen (near Mainz). He was the founder of the congregation of Barthelemites. Processionals are quite rare. They contain the text of the litanies, hymns and prayers formally prescribed for use in processions. They are usually adapted for the use of local churches.
