Beschreibung:

awarded to Joannes Adolphus Potken by the "scholarum Oldensaliensum" conrector Joannes Godfried toe Reppel (died 1788), on the second free endpaper of: Hugonis Grotii. De Jure Belli as Pacis libri tres (...). Cum annotationis auctoris, ejusdemque dissertatione De Mare Libero. Ex altera recensione Barbeyracii. Amsterdam, Apud Janssonio-Waesbergios, 1735, 2 parts in 1 vol., (24),XXXIX,(5),1040; 43,(85) p., with engraved portrait of the author and frontisp. both by Willem de Broen, contemporary gilt vellum, both covers with central fleuron amd corner fleurons within single decorative border, gilt spine with gilt ornaments in 4 compartments and title in ink, 8vo.
Occas. sl. foxed. Binding lacks ties and sl. soiled, spine discol. Very rare Oldenzaal prize certificate, not mentioned by Spoelder. The Latin school in Oldenzaal was founded as early as 1608 and was turned into a gymnasium in 1844. Apparently, there was not a real tradition of awarding school prizes at the Oldenzaal Latin school. For the work: Ter Meulen/ Diermanse 605. Cf. Printing and the Mind of Man 125. Title edition of the edition Amsterdam, G. Fritsch, 1735 and a re-edition of the famous treatise on international law by Hugo Grotius (1583-1645). This edition was edited by the French lawyer Jean Barbeyrac (1674-1744), based on the notes of the German classical scholar Johann Friedrich Gronovius (1611-1671).
