Achille Prisse d’ Avesnes (18071879), a leading French archaeologist, lived in the Levant for more than thirty years. He was hired by Muhammad Ali, the ruler of Egypt since 1827. He became an expert in Arab art, learned Arabic and changed his name to Idriss Efendi. He was among the first who introduced the splendid Arab decoration in European public, with his contribution in the famous Oriental Album s 30 lithographs in 1848.This very influential work is adorned with fine early chromolithographs and constitute a milestone for the Muslim art in Eastern Meditarranean.
