Prisse d’Avesnes E., “La decoration Arabe”, Paris 1880. First edition, FOLIO 42x31cm (Atlas of plates), loosed as issued in contemporary portfolio, title, 4 pages of text (list of plates) and ninety seven (97) splendid chromolithographed plates (of 110) in 79 folio sheets (some double page, creating impressive color views of 67x40cm), very slightly frayed at same edges, overall very clean, bright and in fine condition. Achille Prisse d’ Avesnes (18071879), a leading French archaeologist, lived in the Levant for more than thirty years. He was hired by Muhammad Ali, the ruler of Egypt since 1827. He became an expert in Arab art, learned Arabic and changed his name to Idriss Efendi. He was among the first who introduced the splendid Arab decoration in European public, with his contribution in the famous Oriental Album s 30 lithographs in 1848.This very influential work is adorned with fine early chromolithographs and constitute a milestone for the Muslim art in Eastern Meditarranean.
