The New Guide of the Conversation in Portuguese and English, Peking and to the house of all the booksellers of Paris, 1869, viii + 182 pages, contemporary red half morocco, rubbed to joints and edges, 16mo, together with The Sportsman's Dictionary: or, the Country Gentleman's Companion, in all rural recreations: with full and particular instructions for hawking, hunting, fowling, setting, fishing, racing, riding, cocking, 2nd edition, 1744, 25 engraved plates, including 22 folding (one substantially defective), contemporary calf, rubbed and worn to edges, modern crude reback, 8vo, plus other miscellaneous 19th and 20th century literature and history, including Reminiscences of Henry Angelo, 2 volumes in one, 1830, Tavern Anecdotes, and Reminiscences of the Origin of Signs, Clubs, Coffee-houses..., printed for William Cole circa 1830, Daniel Chodowiecki, Dreiunddreissig Kupferstiche, Berlin, circa 1920s, Donald Friend Tides of Sensuality & Art in a Classless Society, 1978, & 1985, etc. Ex libris Christopher Hogwood CBE (1941-2014). The first work, a wildly and entertainingly inaccurate phrase book, was first published in 1855, this being the second edition. The translator appears to have had no knowledge of English, using only a French dictionary to work out his translations. Mark Twain admired the work for 'its delicious unconscious ridiculousness, and its enchanting naivet�'. (a carton)
