Autograph letter signed as President, to an unidentified recipient, Washington, D.C., 4 JULY 1823, 2 1/2 pages, 4to, two small, partial separation at one fold (not affecting text), a fine letter written the same year as the Monroe Doctrine (substantially formulated by John Quincy Adams), endorsing the son of a political ally for an appointment and explaining that Secretary of State Adams "has been most intensely... preparing instructions, to our ministers, in G[reat] Britain, & Russia, Spain, & the new gov[ernmen]ts in So[uth] America... The fact is the Emperor took that step without much consideration as was manifest, from what occurre'd on the first movement of Mr. Middleton on it; His government showing a desire to withdraw from it in a quiet and friendly manner... I am strongly impressed with the opinion that the affair will be arranged amicably, to our satisfaction..." -- MADISON, JAMES. Autograph letter signed as Secretary of State, to Thomas Swann, Washington, D.C., 9 May 1804, 1 1/4 pages, 4to, slight age-toning, leaves 1 and 2 neatly divided at intersectional fold (not affecting text), with Autograph free frank on integral address leaf , giving detailed advice on the recovery of a loan, "I wish I could speak to you more satisfactorily on the debt of Mr. Mason to the bank of Alex[andri]a of which you are an adviser. The best I can do is to recommend that you write on the subject to Judge James..."; together 2 items . (2)
