A very good letter CONCERNING HIS NIECE, HARRIET LANE, who later served as the official White House hostess during Buchanan's Presidency: "Harriet Lane will arrive in Baltimore...from New York...I will ask you to give her a night's lodging...I would thank you to go to or send to the Depot...as she would be in an awkward condition if she had no friend there on the arrival of the cars. I shall myself go to Baltimore on Monday evening to accompany her to this city...Harriet is going to school at Georgetown..." -- PIERCE, FRANKLIN. Partly printed document signed in full as President, Washington, D.C., 3 March 1857, 1 page, 4to, accomplished in manuscript, directing the Secretary of State to affix the Great Seal; to "the pardon granted to David Dunigan..." -- FILLMORE, MILLARD.
