one-piece construction from varnished hardwood vine, 1.5 long banded metal ferrule; overall length: 35.5". Attached oval silver medallion at head bearing engraved names of R.C. Davis, Governor Felch and Judge Grant. This cane purportedly belonged to Governor Felch; however, all three men are historically connected. Raymond Cazallis Davis (1836-1919) was the librarian at the University of Michigan from September 1861 to May 1862 until his enlistment in the 7th New Hampshire Infantry, being stationed at Fort Jefferson. Alpheus Felch (1804-1896) was born in Maine and moved to Michigan in 1833. He served as Governor of Michigan in 1846-47 then U.S. Senator 1847-53. While Senator, he was appointed to settle Spanish land claims in California. In 1856, he returned to Ann Arbor to resume his law career, serving as Tappan Professor of Law at the University of Michigan from 1879-83. There is a park on the campus of the university that was dedicated in his honor in 1894. Claudius Buchanan Grant (1835-1921), also born in Maine and the son-in-law of Alpheus Felch, served as a captain in the Union Army (Company D, 20th Michigan Infantry), rising to the rank of colonel. He served as justice of the Michigan state supreme court from 1890-1909, chief justice of the Michigan state supreme court in 1898-99 and also 1908. Condition: Expected wear; still EXC.
