In 1689, Francois Pidou de Saint Olon was appointed by King Louis XIV as ambassador to the court of the Moroccan ruler Moulay Ismail in order to conclude a commercial treaty between those two countries and to arrange for a swap of prisoners. His mission was unsuccessful however and he remained in the country only about a month. Many think that St. Olon borrowed from earlier treatises as his stay was so short and his narrative so long. The plates are all of Moroccan costumes. Lot Amendments Condition: Joints cracking, spine chipped at edges; foxing; very good. Item number: 269314
