Title: Present State of the Empire of Morocco; With a faithful account of the manners, religion, and government of that people Author: Pidou de Saint-Olon, Francois Place: London Publisher: R. Bently Date: 1695 Description: [xxiv], 216, [12] pp. Frontispiece, folding map and eight engraved costume plates. (12mo) 16x9 cm (6¼x3½") early full calf, later spine label. First Edition in English. In 1689, Francois Pidou de Saint Olon was appointed by King Louis XIV as ambassador to the court of the Moroccan ruler Moulay Ismail in order to conclude a commercial treaty between those two countries and to arrange for a swap of prisoners. His mission was unsuccessful however and he remained in the country only about a month. Many think that St. Olon borrowed from earlier treatises as his stay was so short and his narrative so long. The plates are all of Moroccan costumes. Lot Amendments Condition: Joints cracking, spine chipped at edges; foxing; very good. Item number: 269314
