POWNALL, Thomas (1720-1805). A New Map of North America with the West India Islands, divided according to the Preliminary Articles of Peace, Singed at Versailles, 20, jan 1783, wherein are particularly Distinguished The United States, and the Several Provinces, Governments &ca which Compose the British Dominions, Laid down according to the Latest Surveys, and Corrected from teh Original Materials of Goverr. Pownall, Membr. of Parlimt. London: Laurie and Whittle, 12th May, 1794.
POWNALL, Thomas (1720-1805). A New Map of North America with the West India Islands, divided according to the Preliminary Articles of Peace, Singed at Versailles, 20, jan 1783, wherein are particularly Distinguished The United States, and the Several Provinces, Governments &ca which Compose the British Dominions, Laid down according to the Latest Surveys, and Corrected from teh Original Materials of Goverr. Pownall, Membr. of Parlimt. London: Laurie and Whittle, 12th May, 1794. Large engraved map of North America with contemporary outline coloring, on 4 sheets joined, overall image 1010 x 1155 mm (1085 x 1183 mm sheet), elaborate figural title cartouche of a native American family group, additional scale cartouche, inset maps of Baffin & Hudson's Bay. (A few short marginal tears, some light browning.) Framed. Based on Bowen & Gibson's 1755 map, this Peace of Paris map details the provisions of the treaty which ended the French and Indian War. Several articles of the treaty are engraved in the map's blank ocean areas. An interesting note to the inset map of California states "The Passage by Land to California, Discover'd by Father Eusebius Francis Kino a Jesuit, between the Years 1698 and 1701, before which, and for a Considerable Time Since California has always been described in all Charts and Maps as an Island" (although the map clearly features an extensive "Sea of California"). Phillips p. 589; Tooley The Mapping of America 49(f): "The eastern boundary of the Province of New York has been moved from the eastern shores of Lake Champlain and now runs along the Connecticutt River. The title of N. Carolina has been inserted in two lines."
