POUND, Ezra. Canzoni . London: Chiswick Press for Elkin Mathews, 1911. 8 o . Woodcut publisher's device in red on the title. 4-page publisher's advertisements for Personae and Exultations. Original streaked grey cloth, upper board and spine lettered in gilt, the spine reading 'CAN , ZONI , OF , EZRA , POUND , ELKIN , MATHEWS' (pale stain at lower edge). Provenance : Richard Aldington (ownership signature, his pencil notes in text); Jonathan Goodwin (his sale, part I, Sotheby Parke Bernet, 29 March 1977, lot 227). FIRST EDITION, FIRST BINDING: RICHARD ALDINGTON'S COPY. A very fine association: Aldington (1892-1962) was a member of Pound's close circle of fellow "Imagists." Aldington's notes are at times extensive, and mainly of a critical nature, with many elucidating references. Gallup Pound (1983) A7a. TIPPED IN AT END: POUND. Autograph manuscript signed with initials, four lines of verse, of his poem "The Bath Tub": "As a bath tub lined with white porcelain When the hot water gives out or goes tepid, So is the slow cooling of our chivalrous passion O my much praised but not altogether satisfactory lady." The poem is one of Pound's most often quoted and referenced. It was originally published in Lustra (1916) and is thought to be addressed to Pound's fiancée Dorothy Shakespear whom he married in April 1914.
