POTTER, BEATRIX. "Wag-by-Wall." In: The Horn Book, Volume XX, Number 3 (May-June special Twentieth Anniversary Number). Boston, 1944. Illustrated (includes a frontispiece of Beatrix Potter with Alison Hart). 8vo, original pictorial cream wrappers. Rare. Contains the first appearance of "Wag-by-Wall" on pages 199-202. Conceived in 1909 as "The Little Black Kettle," it was rewritten in 1929 to be included in The Fairy Caravan. In the end it was left out and it was not until 1940 that it was again revised for inclusion in The Horn Book. Instead of appearing in the Christmas issue it was first intended for, it was held for this special anniversary issue where it first appeared in 1944. This issue also includes an article by Bertha E. Mahoney, entitled "Beatrix Potter in Letters," on pages 214-224, which contains many photographs relating to Hilltop and other Lake District scenes.
